The biggest surprise for me was that relentless self-promoter Sarah Palin didn't saturate the airwaves with this year's "War on Christmas" epic, Good Tidings and Great Joy. I think she was caught flatfooted when her Fox News colleague Megyn Kelly stole the show with just a little bit of dog-whistling.

Fortunately, Dan Savage took the time to review Ms. Palin's book, or at least the introduction where we learn that Peace on Earth involves buying guns and admiring one's own breasts. Read his book review, Good Grief and Great Tits, it's the reason for the season!Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-5412799783746847472013-12-21T20:18:00.002-08:002013-12-21T20:18:50.938-08:00Spugs Unite!β I don't know how we missed this, but last year Treehugger had an item about the Society for the Prevention of Useless Giving on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. The group was known as SPUG for short, and its members, Spugs. Membership was bipartisan, ranging from former President Teddy Roosevelt himself to the daughter of President Woodrow Wilson.

Also around this time every year we get news items about the banning of Christmas by the Puritans. It was a different sort of celebration then, not really about buying stuff, so it's a bit out of our purview ... but here's an especially good roundup of information about that.

Finally, if you haven't seen the Christmas Resistance Movement page on Facebook, have a look-see!Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-51622601093600702722013-12-15T19:52:00.001-08:002013-12-15T23:36:04.800-08:00I'm Dreaming of a White Nicholas

Saint Nicholas of Myra

β To think that only a year ago, Jon Stewart noted that the War On Christmas had become a rote observance, devoid of its original spiritual meaning. I expected a bit of a resurgence this year simply to promote Sarah Palin's latest dumb book, but I never expected it to actually go off the rails into a national debate over whether Santa Claus is white.

Much has been said about this nonsense over the last few days, but I'd like to focus on the man depicted here, St. Nicholas of Myra. This image is from his Wikipedia page, and I'm surprised there haven't been edit wars to replace it with a lighter-skinned depiction. The real Nicholas lived in what is now Turkey and was a swarthy man, though as his fame spread northward, the paintings showed ever-lighter skin. (I imagine it must be hard to maintain a tan at the North Pole.)

Nicholas is one of the most popular Saints there is, even for folks who aren't Catholic or Orthodox. That's because he was by all accounts a vigorous champion of the poor and disadvantaged. Hagiography tends to attribute miracles, supernatural events, and oft-told legends to Saints, which historians naturally tend to be skeptical of. (Personally, my favorite Nicholas legends are in the hardboiled detective genre, but these have yet to be published. Or written.)

One deed stands out as an original and plausible account: A poor family with three daughters could not afford a dowry for them, which meant they would most likely be sold into sexual slavery. When each of these daughters came of age, Nicholas surreptitiously delivered bags of gold, enough for their dowries.

This secret gift-giving has, over the centuries, morphed into a compulsory consumption potlatch ritual. The meaning has been lost. The real Nicholas would probably be called a bleeding-heart socialist by Fox News, the very network that insists he's white (and which is, of course, the primary fabricator of the mythological War On Christmas).

So even if you're resisting what Christmas has become, give a thought to the real Old St. Nick.

A little late for Thanksgivukkah, I'm afraid, but suitable for celebrating Christmas.

Or, if you're Fox News, one of those "Holiday" Celebrations you hear so much about on Fox News.
Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-16040649459819148622013-11-23T12:28:00.002-08:002013-12-15T19:58:39.859-08:00Pre-Thanksgivingβ In the spirit of resistance, we try to hold off the madness until it's absolutely necessary, but Wal-Mart's No Good, Very Bad, Pre-Thanksgiving Week is as good a preamble as any.

In the spirit of resistance, now's a good time to write a letter to the editor about Wal-Mart, and you might want to mention Kohl's, Target, and Toys Backwards-R Us as offenders (not as bad as Wal-Mart on failure to pay a living wage, but they are opening on Thanskgiving).Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-17750510469441541882012-12-13T09:24:00.002-08:002013-12-15T19:57:51.465-08:00War is Heck
β Say, remember the War
on Christmas that was such a big deal right up until 2008? This was a war declared by Fox News, with books and variety shows and whatnot, the subtext being that if you didn't get out there and spend! spend! spend! you were hurting the economy and attacking Jesus.

For some mysterious reason, the network backed off right around the time George W. Bush left office, so that that War on Christmas became, as Jon Stewart mentions up there, a rote observance, devoid of all its original spiritual meaning.

As always, though, there are true believers. This year, with his network sustaining heavy losses on the economic front, General Bill O'Reilly has concentrated his offense on the cultural front of this war, so now the whole thing is the fault of gays and abortionists. So, you don't have to go out and spend so much (that might make Obama look good, after all). Just hate people, like O'Reilly does.Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-13851801995425641952012-12-09T10:12:00.001-08:002012-12-09T10:12:13.826-08:00Hammer Time

β Resisting compulsory consumption extends to other holidays in our multitasking, multicultural modern world. This "Reason for the Season" free e-card is a creation of our red velvet-clad Satanta, who explains:
=v= Time for an anti-consumerist uprising where we seize the shopping carts and build a Yule tree out of them. Who's with me?

Sadly, this is not a photo of such an uprising. This is the non-ironic Christmas tree on the town square at the main street, except of course both the square and street are privatized. =v= Walmart workers are striking on Friday, and I'm going to take a wild guess that Friday will start four hours early, on a day generally known as Thursday, or Thanksgiving, because that's when Walmart plans to open their doors for crazed mobs of shoppers.

Reason for the Season is a Facebook page for folks refusing to shop on Thanksgiving, which is laudable. There are of course many pages, including this one, devoted to not shopping on <strike>Black Friday</strike> Buy Nothing Day (or not shopping at all). This year, though, it seems especially important to support the Walmart workers, who are on the front lines of both the consumer frenzy and the race to the bottom.

Wondering what to wear while standing in line after filling yourself with lunchtime holiday stuffing (gotta get there first, after all)? Something to balance the practicalities of digestion with the dictates of fashion? The fine folks at People of Walmart have an awesome online apparel catalog to help you decide.Jymhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15675802996264542565noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9560586.post-64569042280000198852011-11-25T09:31:00.000-08:002011-11-25T10:00:03.197-08:00#OccupyBestBuy =v= Last night's midnight openings at big box stores have attracted encampments of people with tents who say they represent the 99%. What are their demands? For some reason the authorities haven't sent in riot police as they have elsewhere, so these groups have taken to self-policing, pepper spray included.

(Title notwithstanding, this happened at a Wal*Mart, but I thought I'd spread the love around. In fact I'm having trouble keeping up with which stores to boycott, so I'm pretty much going to go with all of them. TOO quiet!=v= We've been quiet. The Powers That Be declared that the Shopping Season was starting earlier this year, because <s>Black Friday</s> Buy Nothing Day was just too darned late this year. Well, our response is to start resisting even later. That'll show 'em!

You know who else has been quiet? All those conservative pundits who for years have been telling people to shop! shop! shop! because it's good for America. I guess they don't want things to be good for America or something? If anyone can explain this to us, please pipe up.

Or perhaps the discussion has just gone Web 2.0 on us. There's now a Buy Nothing Christmas page on Facebook, and of course we're getting the inside scoop on the North Pole's appalling labor conditions from @angrysantaelf over on Twitter. But if you want to make some noise here, you're welcome to. There was ... something different about it. They were playing Creedence Clearwater Revival instead of Christmas Carols.

Apparently their gimmick this year is "Hippie Holidays," and there were peace signs everywhere (peace on Earth, man!), plus a tree that was festooned with VW Microbuses and, um, hallucinogenic mushroom ornaments. This reminded me of a rather loopy letter we got when we first put the Xmas Resistance on the web, arguing that Santa's red clothes had something to do with the Amanita muscaria. I guess that's one way to keep the economy afloat.

I didn't end up buying any Christmas presents, of course, even though the San Francisco Chronicle has argued that this particular establishment sells "environmentally conscious" gifts -- such as $15,000 nature-themed earrings!
